Twas the night before the US elections..
Posted on Tuesday, 04 November 2008 07:57.. and all through the world the people of this great planet wait with bated breath. The outcome of this election directly affects lives. People will live and die as a result of the election 3500 miles away.
Obama on paper is the winner but I'm sure they said that once or twice about John Kerry. Obama is an inspirational character in the mould of other key black leaders such as Martin Luther King or Malcolm-X, with perhaps less zeal but an abundance of charisma and the overwhelming sense of sensibility.
His choice of vice-president is also another sensible man, Joe Biden. Together, they have the ability to calm down America, give it a sense of reality and stability.
On the otherside, you have the republican candidates, John McCain, and his leiutenant, Sarah Palin. This due remind me of some pair of escaped lunatics, the type you'd find in the original batman series. Scary stuff.
America need to be sensible at a time of incredible turmoil, the world financial crisis (which they caused the bulk of), the wars being fought around the world (mainly by them) and the poverty and suffering that besieges their own country.
I'm not a fan of Americana on the whole, I wouldn't particularly like to go there and there's not much there that interests me. That said, the ripples eminating from there rock the boats of every country around the world, they are THE world superpower today.
I also don't think it's neccessarily the right time to pull out of Iraq or Afghanistan. Dissident forces will return and the entire war will have been for nothing, a momentary interuption in the status quo of a foreign country. The question is should we be involved? I find it hard for britons to question the presence of a miitary force in Afghanistan or Iraq. After all, we occupied Ireland for decades under the premise of peace keeping. Will it be another 70 years untill our nations pull out of these countries?
Because Obama seems to be just what America needs is the exact reason he won't get in, either through bad luck, vote rigging or assasination. White always seems to triumph over right.
