iPhone OS 3.0 Beta, My Thoughts

Posted on Thursday, 19 March 2009 23:02

Well I'm 24 hours into the iPhone 3.0 and I've got mixed feelings.

Imediately, the copy & paste feature is sooo helpful. I can copy and paste HTML tags, but on the downside, it's sluggish, buggy, and has a really confusing implementation of MMS.

Bugs

I found a bug in the mail app whereby if you delete all your mails from the inbox, you lose the ability to return to the folder list, or even account list.

When using streetview in google maps, the menu bar is out of position. Not a show stopper but needs to be polished up a bit.

MMS

MMS on the iPhone is strange and confusing. By definition, it is a multimedia message, but all you seem able to do is send contacts via MMS, not images or voice clips. I may be wrong as the apple website clearly states you can, but how?? This doesn't really cover what I'd expect from a device touting mms capabilities.

Safari

I've not really seen any mention of the new Safari features. Autofill and anti fraud tools have been added. For me this is great as I hate typing in long email addresses etc. this is a big time saver.

Conclusion

This is a beta, so problems are a given, but Apple got lots right. Spotlight search is great, as is the new voice memo feature. As I've already mentioned, the copy and paste mechanism is excellent. People assume that because a Windows Mobile device can do copy and paste, apple should have cracked this in version 1. Well firstly, it's an extremely difficult feature to implement in a gesture based system, and secondly, being unix based, security is very high, so allowing information to pass between applications is potentially dangerous.

I'm looking forward to the next release and also a working facebook app!
