Bullitt, the finest car chase ever?

Posted on Saturday, 30 May 2009 22:56

I've just watched the Bullitt car chase on Blu-Ray. My favourite car chase sequence will always be Ronin, but Bullit certainly has the most engrosing and best shot car chase in any film.

The cat and mouse pursuit lasts 10 minutes, of which the only sound is the throaty roar of the two muscle cars as they chase each other through the streets of San Francisco, and out of the city.

No music, no talking, the cars screech and roar in some beautiful symphony before the finally and the crescendo as the lead car crashes and explodes. You find yourself not breathing for long periods, soaking up the sheer genius of the correography.

A truely outstanding piece of cinema, we may never see the likes of again. It seems that these days the majority of films lack the confidence in the on-screen performance, and feel the desperate need to dub a heart pounding soundtrack over the action.
