Psycho Kiss At Moloko

Posted on Monday, 24 August 2009 08:44

On Friday night I went to see Psycho Kiss in Moloko, Swansea. They followed an accoustic set by Swansea band, No Obligation.

I really have a strong dislike of Wind Street in general, too busy, violent and smelly, but Moloko was actually a nice, small, and personal venue. Cheap drinks but uncomfortable stools, and I'm not talking about the morning-after poo.

No Obligations accoustic set seemed to go on forever. Hates a strong word, but totally appropriate in this situation. I'm being overly dramatic here, they were great if you like mediocre pop rubbish, I thought to myself, you are the ready salted of music. However, people like ready salted, and people like No Obligation, it's just not my cup of tea. I think a lot of it comes down to weak vocals, there's no belt there, no ooomf. I hate to dislike them because the lead guitarist, Deano, seems like such a lovely bloke.

Anyway, after what seemed like burning in hell for hours, Psycho Kiss were up, and I'm already planning to go see them again, they were excellent. Having only seen them once before, in the Milkwood Jam battle of the bands final, it was great to see tehm throw a couple of covers in as well, although their original tracks were equally brilliant.

Amongst the covers were Plug in baby, The Pretender and Perry Mason. With the right audience the place would've been pounding, unfortunately, they didn't have the right audience.

Musically, I was blown away by lead singer Helen Clarke's vocals, more output that a Vietnamese sweat shop, and she jumped about the stage really well for a pregnant lady. Tirelessly fierce drumming by Penfold, fantiastic bass lines by Jason (Cliff Burton is back), and lightning fingers from Paul O'Brien on lead made for a great overall effort, plus they're all a great bunch of people so I'm looking forward to seeing them again.

After the gig, we got a bacon and hotdog roll then headed back to Demetrie's (NinePlanFailed's front man) house. We talked, laughed, watched a few things on youTube, some classsic Damon Packard work, and then I eventually headed home.

Other News

Cult Director, Damon Packard, has agreed to edit and produce the Music Video for NinePlanFailed's Transiberia. Despite having lots of dirt on him, and being on the receiving end of threats of violence, it turns out he's actually happy to help edit the video, and no-one had to die. Ah well,  you live and learn. We'll be making a date to shoot the raw video soon so look forward to a video of biblical proportions.

  • i agree, posted by Huw Reesi've seen No Obligation over the past 4/5 years and yes Deano is a nice guy and has a modicum of talent but the band are so bland and pointless, again its a taste thing but god, there are so many good original bands in Swansea, OWLS, Mook, Hadron Collider, Dufraine, Vanished Mammals, Boatbar to Hamburg, King of Despair, etc etc etc who leave this band cold in terms of musicianship, creativity, inventiveness... i could go on. And yet yesterday an entire page was given to them in our shitty little rag the Evening Post. again like Kiddo 360, a modicum of style over any substance, talent and originality.
