Snow Leopard - First Impressions

Posted on Friday, 28 August 2009 22:48

Well, I left Snow Leopard installing whilst enjoying John McTiernan's finest on Blu-Ray (Die Hard). It's been a hectic night and have only just got back in from the in-laws so these are my initial thoughts.

1. Fast all over. Everything about the OS is so much snappier than before. I did not do a fresh install of leopard, this is just a straight upgrade, so all my old applications and folders were there, so that's impressive. VMWare runs much quicker for some reason, all apps do.

2. Services useful at last. I've always found the services menu option to be out of sorts with the rest of the OS, in that it doesn't really have a clear purpose, it doesn't scream "this is my function" to the user. That's all changed now, with fantastic contextual support giving you the right options.

3. Quicktime X. A really useful application rather than JUST a movie player, screen recording is great, and the easy trim edit function matches that of the iPhone. No preferences pane now, and no Quicktime pro, which is something I've never understood. That fee for the ability to save movie trailers etc. Silly.

That's basically it, I've got some things to do before bed so need to crack on, and another blog post to write.
