Untitled Gay Support Post

Posted on Wednesday, 23 March 2011 18:48

Sometimes, there's something I want to say but finding a suitable title eludes me, and before I know it I've not written anything because I can't think of a title, yet the article content is clear as day in my mind. This post is about two closely related topics, Gay bashers (mainly Christian ones) and the inspiration I get from some of the really great "It Gets Better" support videos out there.

Firstly, I'm a heterosexual man, and happy with my sexuality, though if you think I'm gay for writing this (why would you?) I couldn't care less.

Christian Anti-Gay types

I was going to write about the way the media has stopped focusing on the disaster in Japan because the reactor situation seems likely not to turn into meltdown (which would've really got the viewing figures going) and the fact we seem to be waging war on Libya now, when I saw this article on the Guardian. It refers to Apples pulling of what has been dubbed the "Gay Cure App". (p.s. I get the irony that I'm now not writing about Japan.)

I rolled my eyes, then chuckled. I accept that all Christians are not gay bashers, in fact it's almost certainly a minority, but the most hatefully vocal, vitriolic of the anti-gay movement are almost always "Christians". The beautiful irony of thier stance is completely lost on them, preaching Love with one hand and Hate with the other. Site's such as godhatesfags.com (I refuse to link that site, sorry) paints god in a different light to the glorious being all straight people can expect to meet.

One of the funniest counter arguments to these extremists comes courtesy of http://godhatesshrimp.com, take a look and have a chuckle.

"It gets better"

You may or may not be aware of the "It gets better" video campaign. Search for "It gets better" on YouTube. I love some of these video's, sometimes seeing the bravery of the folks on these video's (I've embedded the Pixar one, as it's one of the best produced and most moving) makes you really thankful for the liberties you enjoy as a straight person. The guy in the pixar video who's crying telling you about going home to his partner is beautiful, and if you don't feel better after watching that I'll find some way of giving you your time back.

Finally, if you really want to see brave, check out the video below. Her name is Kayla Kearney, and she comes out in front of her entire school. What a remarkable girl. So many people find it hard to just talk in front of an audience let alone expose yourself to so much potential abuse and judgment. Being such a coward, I'm in awe of this young girls courage.

Hopefully you'll watch these and be a bit more accepting, or at least more understanding.
